Vocab Detectives

Over the past few weeks in reading my group and I have been focusing on our vocab detectives, were we can find two words that have the same meaning yet one word is more exciting then the other for example Messy- Cluttered. Her is what I did:
The Statue of Liberty
Standing over 45 metres tall, this enormous statue is situated on a tiny island in
New York harbour.
Built of copper and dressed in Greek-like robes the statue holds an flaming
torch in her raised right hand. Resting on a base, this famous lady shown
stepping towards freedom from a broken chain at her feet.
A lift is available to transport visitors to the top of the pedestal.
From there they can climb a spiral staircase of one hundred and sixty
eight steps to reach the inside  of her head.
A gift to the United States of America from France,
the Statue of Liberty has been a welcoming symbol since it was put
up in 1884.

The Tirade
"I am shocked," shouted Mum, "at the statue of your bedroom.
It is in a mess. You have rotting fruit from last week under your bed and it is now
attracting fruit flies. You have six glasses of smelly milk growing mould.
You have your dirty clothes thrown across the floor. You have your clean clothes
mixed with them. You haven't made your bed for three weeks.
The sheets are messy and so smelly
that i had to open the windows to get rid of the stink.
I am insisting the rules i

Machines
Machines were invented to make life easier for humans.
It is a credit to our ancestors  that they were constantly seeking
ways to make work more efficient. Most machines have several parts and
may include parts which move. Some complicated  machines such as computers
and cars have a large number of parts which work alone or at the same time.

A very simple but effective macineh is the pulley which lifts loads upwards.
Machines require an energy input but the energy output is greater than before.
For example, a small pull on the rope of a pulley can lift a large weight.
Most pulleys have more than on wheel which makes bigger again the weight
which can be lifted.

On the beach
There was not a cloud in the sky. The sun shone on the water.
The ocean looked like a thousand mirrors, sparkling and glittering.
There was hardly a breath of wind. It was a perfect day at the beach.

Many people had decided to spend the day at the beach.
In the water children were swimming and playing; there were bodyboards,
beach balls and bobbing heads everywhere.
The clear waves rolled into the shore, creating a fizzing foam.
Toddlers and their mothers splashed in the foam. In the sand further
away from the water, groups of children were building sand castles with
' the help of spades and buckets. People reading books and magazines were
lying on colourful beach towels under striped umbrellas.
The sound of laughter filled the air.

Further along the beach, away from the activity,
a man and woman were wondering away from the shore.
Occasionally the woman picked up a shell and tossed it into the water.
Seagulls flew above squawking and looking for fish.

Before long the sun began to sink in the sky and the temperature got cooler.
Families packed up their belongings and walked back to their cars.
After all the people had gone home,
the only sound left was the crashing of the waves on the shore.
The beach was now empty, until the next perfect day on the beach.

What is a pilgrim?
A pilgrim is some person that travels around to holy places.

What do pilgrims do? Why?
Pilgrims travel on a journey around the world they go to places were they feel jesus significance. Pilgrims go to  places where jesus was during his lifetime.

Many people go on a pilgrimage, which is usually linked to holy places.  They go to places all around the world. A
pilgrimage can be set anywhere you would like it to be, it could be a long or short journey.  Pilgrims often choose to go to mount calvary to connect to the way Jesus and his followers felt when Jesus was stripped of his garments, and made carry his cross.
Holy places can be anywhere where you feel God is there, God is everywhere in the world he can be anywhere you want him to be.

Pilgrims go to any place they would feel religious significance. Here are some I found
